Device puzzles police
The Christchurch police; are still puzzled about, the] origin of an “explosive de-] vice” found in Victoria Park yesterday morning. The Victoria Park ranger, Mr P. C. De Wys, found the device on the park access road north of the tea kiosk about 8 a.m.
It was 15cm (6in) long, scm (2in) wide, and comprised a soft substance! bound with tape around a; red object. Wire leads were (attached to the device,: -which had burn marks on it. ' I “Apparently someone had tried to set if off. It could: • have been some sort of :home-made firework,” said a: C. 1.8. spokesman.
