Talks on works tradesmen adjourned

The talks relating to the recent strike of tradesmen at the Islington freezing works were adjourned in Wellington yesterday to November 8.

The 40 to 50 tradesmen at the Islington works called off their strike at midnight on Sunday so that the Wellington talks, between the Federation of Labour, the Freezing Companies’ Association, and Waitaki N.Z. Refrigerating, Ltd, could go ahead.

The tradesmen had been on strike for two weeks over Waitaki's refusal to pay the rate of pay agreed to by the F.O.L. and the Freezing Companies’ Association for tradesmen employed by contractors at their freezing works.

Tradesmen employed at the eight other Waitaki works, some of w’hom took part in limited industrial action in support of those Islington workers who were dismissed during the strike, returned to work late last week.

The industrial relations manager of Waitaki, Mr M.

Willyams, said last evening that the talks yesterday had been “constructive.”
