Previn and Peterson explore jazz
Before his appointment as conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, Andre Previn was best known in Britain for his achievements as a jazz pianist. At the time some of the more sceptical critics voiced their suspicion of the apparent switch from light to more serious
music, but those doubts have iong since been dispelled by Previn’s proven talents not only in the concert hall but also as a presenter of music. His music documentaries have spanned a range of subjects as diverse as the music of a “Tom and Jerry” cartoon and the origin of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
In “Nocturne” tonight Philip Chatfield introduces an “Omnibus” documentary which features Previn as he returns to his first love — jazz, music. With the Canadian virtuoso. Oscar Peterson, he takes a look at the history of piano jazz and the styles and personalities involved in its development.
