Mayor to open conference

The Mayor of Christchurch (Mr Hay) will open the first N.Z. Brake Specialists’ Association conference today, at the Avon Park Motor Hotel. The president of the association is Mr C. Perham, of Christchurch. The two-day conference will involve a wide variety of experts from all over New Zealand, and some from Australia.

Illis is the first time all the brake specialists in New Zealand have got to-

gether, and one of the main objectives will be to set up an apprenticeship training scheme for brake specialists. Australia already has such a scheme. The speakers at the conference . today will include the principal Medical Officer of Occupational Health of the Department of Health. Dr J. Stoke, who will talk about asbestos, which is used to make brake linings.

Mr G. E. Wilson, the assistant chief Inspector of Factories, of the Depart-

ment of Labour, will also talk about asbestos. “Brakes and safety” will then be discussed "by Mr G. Liversage, the assistant chief automotive engineer of the Ministry of Transport. Other items on the agenda include the brake training course, brake engineering and brake specialists in Australia. Tomorrow, , further topics will be raised and officers for the 1979-80 year will be elected.
