Police move on racing, drugs link

PA , Wellington The Hawke’s Bay police have been told by the Commissioner of Police (Mr R. .1. Walton) to investigate alleged breaches of drug laws by people connected with racing. Mr Walton said last evening that he had been prompted to make the order after publicity given to a Hawke’s Bay incident. The Hawke’s Bay District Racing Committee yesterday imposed penalties ranging from severe reprimands to fines of $l5O against 11 persons employed in local racing stables. Mr W. E. Ormond, chairman of the committee, had said earlier that the committee was dealing with the matter because of concern about the possible effects on the careers of young riders if they were convicted in a criminal court. Efforts had been made toI “play it down as much as! possible,” he said. Mr Walton said last evening that the question of what effect a conviction would have on a person’s career [was a matter for the courts, but the police were allowed ]some discretion.
