Grim sight for Coast whitebaiters
Greymouth reporter Cucumber fish have i started to appear in some West Coast rivers, an ominous sign for whitebaiters. I Cucumber fish resemble! smelt but are clear and give off a strong smell. It has (long been believed that they l signify the end of the white! (bait season. Mr F. R. May, fisheries inspector for the Ministry of I Agriculture and Fisheries at Greymouth, said yesterday that quantities of whitebait had fallen off in almost all’ West Coast rivers. Catches are small, and in ] Haast a whitebait buyer saidl that the season appeared to ■ have stopped. The season does not usu-i ally build up in South Westi land until November, so fish- ’ ermen in the Haast area are I keeping their fingers cros-| sed.
