Riverbank works
Sir, — It has been fascinating to watch the antics of the City Council and/or the Drainage Board in attempts to restore stability to the bank of the Avon outside my window in Cambridge. Terrace. These have involved: (1) chopping down a lovely old willow tree; (2) building a wooden stopbank in the river; (3) filling behind the stopbank and up the riverbank with sand and soil (twice). The latest effort has been to dig out behind the stopbank again, and to leave a large pile of soil on the footpath. Even more fascinating, however, has been to watch the use made of these efforts by children who have played in the sand, used the bank as a jumping pit and ridden minibikes over the pile of fill. The authorities can rest assured that, even if they have been inefficient in containing the erosion of the riverbank, they have built a popular adventure playground. — Yours, etc., MICHAEL FREE.
