‘Employment or else’ campaign
|PA ■ Wellington i Many commercial enterprises have benefited from [Maoris for years but have given them little employment opportunity in return, says Mr M. Rata (Lab., Northern Maori) who believes manj- businesses do not employ Maoris even when suitable positions are Available. With Auckland Maori leaders, Mr Rata intends to organise an “employment or else” campaign. A business monitoring [campaign would be conducted. If any organisations were found to be reticent employers, Maoris would be asked to support a business boycott of the offending establishments.
“We are not asking for an employment quota but there is no reason why more businesses should not reflect a Maori component on their personnel side,” Mr Rata said. The business monitoring would begin first in Northland and the East Coast areas where there was a high degree of unemployment among Maoris.
