She was a reporter on a London paper, half a world away from Barrington Street, Christchurch. 2. One of the men on the London paper was contemptuous of women.. “Waste of time letting them into the profession,” he would say. “They should stick to their own, the muddle-headed darlings. The average female brain couldn’t organise a booze-up in a brewery.” Back at her own desk, she picked up the telephone. “So-and-so speaking. The Daily So-and-so. We’re thinking of a feature on CAMRA — the Campaign for Real Ale. Will you risk taking half a dozen Daily So-and-so reporters on a tour Of your brewery?
**. . . A dozen? That’s splendid Tuesday. Thank you very much.” Next task — to choose the lucky dozen, to give Central Typing the details, and to get the invitations sent out. “Yes, next Tuesday. We can send them to the following. . .” Came the day. Came she to the brewery. Came — nobody else. Not a I soul. She waited and waited. There, I there, said the brewery people It’s an I open invitation. Cheer up. Bring them j next week, why not? ] Indeed she would. The invitations ] had been sent but for the wrong Tuesday. There was her own voice on | the tape: “Yes, next Tuesday week. I An’ send them to the following. .
