Journalist dead
PA Auckland A New Zealand soldier whose speech captivated the hearts of thousands gathered round Nelson’s Column in London in 1918. has died in Tauranga. He was Mr Hugh Fraser, a former chief subeditor of the “New Zealand Herald." He was 88. Born in New Plymouth and educated at Nelson College. Mr Fraser worked in journalism in Fleet Street and in India before serving with the Ist
N.Z.E.F. in France in World War I. Invalided to Britain with injuries, Mr Fraser is remembered by many as the New Zealand soldier who climbed on to the base of Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square on Armistice Day and captivated with an impassioned speech ’ an audience of many thousands gathered there. Mr Fraser trained as a journalist on the "Daily News,” at New Plymouth, and was with the “Herald” from 1926 until his retirement in 1952.
