St John to get two new ambulances
PA Wellington The purchase of two standard design ambulances for use throughout New Zealand has been approved by the Minister of Health (Mr Gair). The vehicles, one in the North Island and one in the South Island, will allow the St John Ambulance Association to put into service the first of what will eventually become the uniform design for ambulances. Mr Gair announced the purchase at the association's annual conference at Wellington. "Different vehicles could
be required for such conditions as sealed or metal roads, and hilly country or flat areas, but I am sure that one design can be developed to accommodate most of these,” he said. “The saving and sheer convenience of such features as bulk purchasing of vehicles and parts cannot be overlooked. A standardised system must create greater efficiency and economy.” Mr Gair said that such specialist features as fourwheel drive were still needed, and this was provided for in the design criteria of the new ambulances.
