Anniversary season
St Albans will be entering its seventy-fifth season of participation in the Canterbury Cricket Association’s competitions this month, starting with the club’s opening day at Hagley Oval on Saturday at 1.30 p.m. About 35 persons attended an inaugural meeting at the Wesleyan School Room in Rugby Street on August 31, 1905, when it was unanimously decided to form a club under the name of St Albans.
Since then, some of the most famous of all New Zealand cricketers have been associated with the club. Included on the St Albans honours list are Don Sandman, Cyril Crawford, “Curly” Page, Bill Merritt, Tom Burtt, Matt Poore, Sam Guillen, Zin Harris and Steve Boock. It is planned to celebrate the anniversary next Easter, and the week-end programme consists of special matches for men and women, a banquet and ball, a “smoke” concert, and a golf match. At present every endeavour is being made to contact as many past players and administrators as possible. A mailing list is being compiled, and interested persons are asked to contact the secretary at P.O. Box 1919, or the club captain, Mr Alan Jamieson (telephone 489-394).
