Composting site proposed
j A man who has ex-1 iperimented with composting rubbish at metropolitan tips wants to set up a composting site between Travis Road and New Brighton Road. Mr P. Brown has applied Ito the Christchurch Citv Council for registration of the site ; The health and general committee was told yesterday that a district scheme ideparture might be required 'before the application could be approved. Comment is also needed from the Health Department because the composting would be considered an offensive trade. If the application was granted, notice of the consent would also have to be given to local bodies within; Bkm of the site. No consent should take effect within
three months of that notic’, said a report from the Chi f City Health Inspector (Mr A P. Millthorpe). Mr Brown’s application said the site would be about 850 m by 130 m. and would receive refuse from the pub lie. The site would be just east of the drainage reserve. After it was tipped at an unloading area. rubbish would be heaped tn a maximum height of about 7m, then watered down with hoses. Those heaps would be left for one week to thre* weeks before being stacked again, further away from the public area. The mixture would be ready for screening within i five months. Material most readily screened could be used as a potting mixture i for gardens or farms. Other material would be buried on the land.
