Kirk Trust grants for education

The Norman Kirk Trust made 19 grants this year worth a total of $lB,lOl to individuals or groups in New Zealand and the South Pacific who lacked the means for further education or training. The trust received 400 applications for assistance this year, double the number of last year. Grants went to such diverse groups as the Tonga Girl Guides Association, which received $866 to repair its headquarters as part of its twentyrfifth anniversary celebrations, to $5OO for miss A. K. Uluiviti. of New Zealand, to assist her in law studies at Acukland University. The continuation of

awards made in previous years brings the tolal cost of 1979 awards to $22*111. compared with $22,393 the year before. Public donations to the fund, which was started three years ago, continue to dwindle. In the 1977-78 financial year, $7394 was received in donations, $7033 of this coming from the Fijian government. This year $865 was received. $825 of which came from the New Zealand Labour Party caucus. However, the paucity of donations is more than offset by the income from investments. which at $27,739. is about $l3OO up on last year, giving the trust a total capital of $247,531
