Johann Verweij top goal scorer

Trans’ Tours United took second place in the Rothmans Soccer League competition in thoroughly assertive fashion yesterday, and two of its goals were scored by Johann Verweij, making him the leading individual scorer for the league United thrashed Eastern Subrubs, 5-1, in Auckland, scoring four times in the second half. Verweij’s goals lift his tally to 16, bettered by only five players in the history of the competition. It was the second time this season that United has scored five times in a match and the win is worth $lO,OOO to the club in prize money. But while there are jubilations in Christchurch, it is also a sad time for Subrubs, once one of New Zealand’s best clubs. It is now relegated. along with Courier Rangers, to the northern league. It is also unfortunate for Manawatu United that it is relegated after only one year in the league. Its failure to score goals early in the season cost it dearly. It scored five goals in its first nine games and the margin of goal difference which enabled Stop Out to survive the drop ahead of Manawatu was only three goals. Mount Wellington waited until eight minutes from the end of its match with Wei-

lington Diamond United in Auckland before scoring through Keith Nelson and then quickly added a second goal to make certain of victory in a largely dull match. Dunedin City had mixed fortunes at Paekakariki over the week-end - on Saturday it beat Stop Out but yesterday lost, 2-0, to W.D.U. The match was only the eighth in which W.D.U. has managed to score two goals. One match remains to complete the competition. Next week-end, Newmans Nelson United will play W.D.U. in Wellington. Results: Mount Wellington 2 (Keith Nelson, Billy McClure), Wellington Diamond United 0. Half time: 0-0. Stop Out 0, Dunedin City 1 (Pat Berry penalty). Half-time: 0-1. Eastern Suburbs 1 (Brian Armstrong), Trans Tours United 5 (Johann Verweij 2 including one penalty, lan Park, Frank McKay, Steve Sumner). Half time: 0-1. Wellington Diamond United 2 (Gary Paddison, Peter Brown), Dunedin City 0. Half-time: 1-0. ROTHMANS LEAGUE
