Cypriot treasures

Sir, — I refer to your recent article, “Cyprus police seize treasures” ("The Press,” September 18). Certain Western governments have in the past subsidised with billions of dollars and military equipment, or stood by watching, the devastating Turkish invasion in Cyprus which turned hundreds of thousands of people into homeless refugees, so that my country would remain a military base. They also permit some of their citizens to buy unlawfully from the invaders and shamelessly exhibit in private collections or national museums the archaeological treasures of Cyprus. These things, testifying of the Greek culture and civilisation of Cyprus, as well as Cyprus itself belong to the Cypriots. Writing this letter, I would like to make an appeal to all those people who feel something about these injustices to show their concern. For many are those who are proud of their Greek heritage, so ruthlessly destroyed today in Cyprus. —Yours, etc., D. KARAGEORGIS. September 19, 1979.
