Architectural costs

Sir, — I take isSue with the views expressed at the opening of the New Zealand Embassy in Washington

(“The Press,” September 18) which suggest that impressive architecture needs impressive funds. Any architect who can design well only for the rich is of small value to society. Architecture is a community service, and a good architect should aLo be able to offer poor people the best possible use of space. Moreover, what a wealthy person regards as good taste may not be so to a person who prefers an efficiently-function-ing house to a work of art. If a person likes a humble unpretentious house, a good architect will provide the best possible humble house. A good architect will provide the most appropriate office building, regardless of the size of the budget. A good architect does not need to leave the stamp of his own greatness on his designs, a point architects too often miss. — Yours, etc., SUZANNE EVANS. September 18, 1979.
