Assault claim in House

PA Wellington Tempers flared in Parliament last evening when the Minister of Broadcasting (Mr' Templeton) said that the; Labour member of Parlia-' ment for Onehunga (Mr F. L. Rogers) had been before a magistrate for assaulting a taxi-driver. The accusation was made during debate on the Broadcasting Estimates. Mr Rogers retorted, “Damn liar,” and referred to Mr Templeton as a “little idiot” as other Opposition members shouted angrily at Mr Templeton. Mr D. R. Lange (Lab., Mangere) asked for Mr Templeton’s suggestion of criminal conduct against Mr Rogers to be withdrawn because it was untrue and “grossly improper.” Mr Templeton said. “My understanding was that the member was involved in a fracas that did involve the police. “If it did not involve laying of charges I apologise because I am not aware of those facts.” Mr Rogers also withdrew and apologised for his remarks.
