C.F.M. wins order from Japan for lamb cuts
A major contract for the supply of special cuts of meat to Japan has been negotiated by the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, Ltd. A contract has yet to be signed, but the general manager of C.F.M. (Mr Derek Morten) said that this was only a formality. Most of the lamb cuts will be undertaken at the Fairton works, Ashburton, and this will substantially increase, last years’ output at Fairton of 40,000 carcasses. Cutting trials were completed successfully recently, and all that remains is for negotiations with the Meat Workers Union to be finalised. Mr Morten said that'additional freezing capacity will be installed in the next two
JiOr three months to handle f the additional lamb cuts. i According to the com- - pany’s buying and process- , ing division manager (Mr John Drayton) it is hoped to > progressively increase the amount of processing - “whenever it is economically ; possible to do so.” ,He pointed out that im- ■ mediate benefits to New Zealand could be measured ; in terms of additional overJ seas earnings. The meat ' workers concerned at Fairton will also benefit by an extended season, and higher ■ earnings. > Mr Drayton said that high ' labour productivity, sound t management, and maximum ' utilisation of facilities will be essential if the company - is to continue to compete I successfully with overseas > cutting and packing plants.
