Container handling I falls at Lyttelton

The number of containers handled at the Lyttelton and Wellington terminals fell during the first four months of this year, according to figures prepared by the Waterfront Industry Commission.

The commission says the number of containers handled at the four terminals showed an increase from 77,117 for the corresponding period in 1978 to 83,554 this year. Auckland handled 30,800 containers compared with 26,790 in the same period last year; Wellington, 26,952 (27,571); Lyttelton, 6268 (6527); and Port Chalmers, 19,534 (16,229). The average number of container movements per ship visit during the four months was 491 compared with 459 in the first four months of 1978.
