Educational help
Sir, — I am surprised that Professor Marie Clay should say that tests “proved that New Zealand children were the best educated in the world.” Which tests? Having taught in England for one year, Australia for 13 years and New. Zealand for 11 years in all classes in primary schools, I have wide experience in the teaching of reading. Among those children to whom I have taught remedial reading some have turned out to be university material. Much backwardness in reading is related to psychological problems, lack of books in the home or too much pressure from parents. I can’t agree with the slower children getting more of the teacher’s time than they already do. AU children deserve a fair proportion of attention from their teachers. Reading difficulties must be diagnosed in the early stages and not left until the Standard IV, Form 1 and 11 areas before any remedial help is given. Then it is advisable to give individual tuition. — Yours, etc.,
