Ray libel suit
James Earl Ray has filed a libel suit against Representative Harold Ford for saying Ray was responsible for the death of the civilrights leader the Rev. Martin Luther ' King. Ray, serving a 99-year sentence after pleading guilty to a charge of murdering King, accused the politician of libelling him in statements made last month after the end of a House of Representatives investigation into the civil-rights leader’s death. Ray asked for a jury trial, and said, if a jury should find Ford innocent of libel, Ray would accept full responsibility for the homicide and abort efforts to gain a trial in the criminal court, which would resolve the matter permanently. —- Memphis.
