‘Foreign cash means jobs’

PA Auckland Unions should not oppose any increase in foreign investment in New Zealand, according to the Minister of Labour (Mr Bolger). Suggestions that foreign investment would exploit New Zealand labour were, he said, not correct. The whole aim was to improve New Zealand’s economic performance and improve not only job opportunities, but also the standard of living. Mr Bolger told members of the Auckland Financial Executives Institute: “Companies intending to incorporate overseas capital must spend time explaining the advantages of such a move to the tradeunion movement.”

An early analysis of the various options for the development of Maui gas pointed to a huge capital investment the size of which had not been contemplated before in New Zealand. Many new jobs would be created: the various options for Maui gas suggested that there would be between 3500 and more than 7000 new jobs. “These are the workers directly involved,” Mr Bolger said. "Another considerable number will be directly involved in supplying goods and equipment to those on site.” Special courses might be set up to train people in the skills necessary to develop the nation’s energy resources.
