Young wins vote delay

NZPA New York The United States Ambassador to the United Nation. (Mr Andrew Young) won a personal victory in the United Nations Security Council when a Palestinian spokesman announced on F-iday that non-aligned delegates would not press for a vote on a resolution proclaiming Palestinian rights. The United State- had sought a delay in the vote, but delegates made it clear the agreement to postpone a vote on the Arab-backed resolution was in deference to Mr Young, who would have been forced to veto it as one of his last acts in the council.

Hasan Abdel Rahman, the Palestine Liberation Organisation’s deputy observer, told reporters the decision to delay a vote was “the result of contacts and negotiations in the last two days.” He said the agreement was reached in consultations after the P.L.O. chief Mr Yasser Arafat, was reached by telephone in the Middle East and approved a postponement.
