Car-parks worse than motel extension?
A long list of objectors has criticised a proposed 24bedroom extension of the Autolodge Motor Inn, at 72 Papanui Road. Traffic problems, noise and pollution were cited in objections before a Christchurch City Council townplanning hearing recently. Although the motel development complies with district scheme off-street parking provisions, 93 more perches would have to be bought for provisions covering the ratio of building area to land area to be complied with.
If more land were bought, the four-storey building extension could be built as of right, the hearing panel was told by a senior planning officer, Mr M. J. G. Garland. He said that might mean the motel owners would buy houses in Onslow Street — and put car-parks there — to extend the main building. That could detract from the neighbourhood more than the extension, Mr Garland said. He would not oppose the proposal even though it did not strictly comply with the district scheme. A decision was reserved.
