Jetboat for refugees

PA Wellington An Air Force Hercules will fly a New Zealand jetboat to Singapore this week, to join World Vision’s refugee rescue ship, the Seasweep. The jetboat will be used to patrol the Indonesian Anambas Islands to pick up Vietnamese boat refugees washed up on to the scattered islands and coral atolls, according to a statement from World Vision. The V 8 powered jetboat, ideal for shallow and tricky waters around reefs, can ferry 12 people at a time back to the Seasweep, which will be anchored off-shore.

World Vision’s executive director (Mr G. P. Renner) said he was delighted with the participation of the Air Force. “This action will save thousands of lives,” he said. “We have estimates of 17,000 people being stranded on the islands and it is desperately urgent we get them off before the monsoons strike in October.” The Seasweep has received permission from the Indonesian Government to take the refugees to recognised refugee camps where they will receive basic attention and care.
