Depressed period in second week

The port of Lyttelton Is entering the second week of one of its most depressed eras for many years with only three scheduled arrivals apart from the regular roll-on services. The Union Steam Ship Company's roll-on services with the Shipping Corporation’s regular Cpastai Trader service provided tile major port activity for the port last week. In sharp contrast, the Kwangsi due to leave this week for Tauranga has been diverted from I Mount Maunganu* because of a congestion of more than 12 ships waiting to use the port. ’ I The Kwangsi will now go to tWhangarei instead of riding at anchor off Mount Maunganui for about 10 days. British shipbuilders are meeting this week to prevent what they describe as an “oncoming crisis” with big redundancies among engine builders. The shipping industry is staging a desperate race to find buyers for a remarkable new engine which cuts fuel costs. Doxford, the last maker of allBritish engines for big ships, faces closure if no new orders can be found. Its new three-cylinder engine could be a world-beater, burning the most inferior fuel but matching the performance of other medium-speed engines with 14 cylnders. Ellerman Lines and Prince Line have shown their faith in British engineering by ordering the engine for seven new ships. Other ship owners are reported

• to be waiting to see If the perI formance at sea Jives up to the ' Doxford claim. I Meanwhile the Swedish steam • turbine builders, Stal-Laval, has reported an expected rush in . demands for its engines because : of a projected flow of container • ships over the next seven years.
