Marriage

Sir, — George Sweet (Director of the Marriage Guidance Council, Christchurch) states that one of the myths of marriage is “that love is necessary for a satisfactory marriage.” (“The Press,” August 23). I declare, however, that precisely the opposite is true. Love is absolutely fundamental to sound marriage and to believe otherwise is to maintain a view of complete despair and hopelessness. Mr Sweet’s assertions are symptomatic of our society, the marriages of which are largely in decay and collapse, because of a massive departure from sound Christian consensus. Surely it is a tragedy to see people cling with futile hope to impersonal and lonely views such as were contained in Mr

Sweet’s article and I have compassion for those who do. Marriage is not a selfish relationship but a union of giving, one to another. The personal, loving, creative God is the only foundation upon which to build a life oi- a marriage.— Yours, etc.,

bruce McFarlane. August 24, 1979.
