Cyclists’ good start
NZPA special correspondent _ Ulverstone, Tasmania The young Aucklander, Tony Songhurst, was first equal and the “King of the Mountains” in the cycling Tasmanian Tour yesterday. Toni Horne won a stage, and Vern Hanaray was a joint tour leader. Kevin Blackwell was second tn the Stage won by Horne, Mark Nichols was fifth in the "King of the Mountains,” and the Air New Zealand team had a mere than satisfactory start. The field was buffeted severely on the Sikm first stage to
Latrobe, but there were few mishaps or problems for the N Hanaray punctured after 12km but was quickly back on and Songhurst, also puncturing after 65km, lost little time In his chase. AB six New Zealanders, the five in the official Air New Zealand team and Hanaray, were there for the sprint, won a little surprisingly by Graham Bandon, from Trevorrow and Besanko. Hanaray made nq race of the 9km criterion, breaking away at the beginning and winning three of the four sprints.
