New role for Saunders in annual golf contest
Geoff Saunders has been a key member for eight years of the Town golf team that has held the whip hand against Country in their annual match. Only once, in 1973, was Saunders in the losing team. Saunders will face a fresh challenge on Sunday. He is captain of the Country team and is looking forward to leading the rural golfers to a rare win. Country has one of its best teams for years; Town is weakened through four players not being available, and Country might well succeed at the Harewood old course.
Saunders, a member of the Charteris Bay and Christchurch clubs, has played in both the country and town i n t e r-club competitions. However, most of his social
rounds are played at Charteris Bay, and that has influenced his decision to play for Country.
The Canterbury stroke and match-play champion has
been in outstanding form this year. He has strung together 19 wins and a half from 20 matches at club, inter-club, provincial, and representative level. His last loss was to Ron Johnston (Otago) in the 1978 Freyberg event.
After Saunders in playing order are three Canterbury representatives, John Allin, lan Ross, and Dennis Beggs. Missing from the Town team for a variety of reasons are Simon Robinson, Fred Poskitt, Brent Street, and Bruce Taylor. Mark Street will be Town’s top player, and John Williamson will captain the side from the third position. The teams in playing order are:—
Town: Mark Street, Ricky Vincent, John Williamson
(captain), Murray Brown, Paul Atkinson, Bob Farrant, Len McKenzie, Ross Griffith, Nick Mclvor, Gary Maw, Paul Shearer, Alan Williams, Colin McNally, Chris Barry, Noel Bain, John McCormick. Reserves: John Bierwirth, John Parlane, Neil Ried, Tony Vincent. Manager: Mr I. M. Wright. Country: Geoff Saunders (captain), John Allin, lan Ross, Dennis Beggs, Bob Pirie, Graham Gunn, lan Carruthers, Stephen Hill, John Barnes, Steve Parker, Garth Madden, George
Turner, Colin Nairn, Harley Henderson, lan Bourke, Martin Stanley. Reserve: John Langan. Manager: Mr B. V. Glubb.
