Arms talks over

The 39-member United Nations Disarmament Committee has ended its year’s work after failing in the main aims of starting serious talks about reducing world arsenals of nuclear and chemical weapons. The delegations, including four nuclear powers but not China, said exchanges of views on nuclear disarmament had been “most

useful” but would need to be intensified when the panel meets again next February 5. In a report to the United Nations General Assembly, they said that although all nations recognised the urgency of a chemical-weapons ban it had not been possible to agree on an approach to such a ban nor even on the setting up of a working group. — Geneva.
