Grant to S.O.S.

Sir, — Kathleen and Harald Dingnis and others write (August 17) to confirm their acceptance of the Mental Health Foundation grant to S.O.S. It is hardly surprising that such a grant would appeal to quite a few people. It is equally obvious that it would be unacceptable to many others. The point at issue is whether money raised specifically for the Mental Health Foundation can properly be applied to an organisation, the stated aim of which is to circumvent the law of the land. Quite apart from this consideration it is surely questionable that money raised for a clearly defined cause should be granted to a controversial cause, not related -to the original beneficiary. It may help to put the matter into perspective by asking those people who do concur with the foundation’s decision, whether they would experience similar joy if a grant was made to help pay wages to S.P.U.C. counsellors. — Yours, etc., J. V. PIERSON. August 17, 1979.
