Slip rips through garage
PA Wanganui More than 200 tonnes of earth crashed down a Wanganui hillside early yesterday, demolishing part of a service station. The slip, only a few hundred metres from the city centre, has caused thousands of dollars of damage. It crashed through the rear door of the service station’s motor-cycle repair section, swept through the workshop and crashed out the front door, taking motor-cycles and spare parts with it. A main roof girder buckled through the ceiling, leaving a big gap in the roof. The slip was noticed by a passing motorist early yesterday. Clearing work began immediately. The slip occurred in an
area ' excavated from the steep hillside about five years ago to enable the garage to be built. In the street immediately above the slip, residents yesterday were talking of an-
other Abbotsford. However, the Wanganui City Council’s deputy engineer (Mr C. R. Booth) said, “I do not think the people in Hipango Terrace are in any danger at present.’’
