Cook Strait crossing bid in bathtub

PA Napier Five Napier men will attempt in mid-November to become the first to row a bathtub across Cook Strait. The atempt is a fundraising effort. Two-thirds of the proceeds will go to the Hawke’s Bay Multiple Sclerosis Society, and the rest to the Onekawa Nadadores Swimmng Club. The 6m tub’s crew will include the Cook Strait

swim record-holder, John Coutts. A multiple sclerosis sufferer, Mr Carl Nilson, is building the catamarantype “tub.” More than 200 hours have already gone into its construction. The craft’s twin hulls are a conbination design, based on a rowing shell and a surf boat, and the bath tub, mounted between the hulls, will serve as the helmsman’s cockpit.
