“Lyttelton poverty”
Sir,—ln view of a recent National Party publication in my electorate, may 1 correct any confusion left by a report on “Lyttelton poverty” (“The Press,’’ June 23). As I indicated to you the day after that article appeared, I did not say “poverty could not be found at Lyttelton . . . because it does not exist,” a statement attributed to me. When asked by the reporter about the level of poverty at the port (a very small part of the electorate), I made it clear—or so I thought—that, based on the number of people contacting me, other parts of the electorate had a higher incidence of people living in hardship. I said only four or five people from the port area had contacted me, compared with considerably higher numbers from other parts of the electorate. I hope this puts the record straight. —Yours, etc.,
ANN HERCUS, M.P. for Lyttelton. August 15, 1979.
