Library site and postal centre
Sir, — Apparently the Christchurch Mayor and the City Council are upset because the Government is now not prepared to buy the existing library building for the purpose of smashing it down so that they might landscape the bare site with a view to softening the image of the huge new postal centre block. No amount of landscaping would shield the bureaucratic monstrosity being constructed, and surely no amount of landscaping would compensate for the loss to the character of this city by demolition of our historic old Public Library. What a shameful contrast between the stark bare monolithic block of the new Post Office and the distinctive beauty of the old building in the Square. It would also be a great loss if this building were to go. Let us put the good of the community before dollars and big business and use this building as a people’s recreation centre. — Yours. etC ” ROBIN BROWN. August 16, 1979.
