Biko relative held
NZPA-Reuter Cape Town
The South African security police yesterday said they had detained Mxolisi Mvovo, brother-in-law of the black activist Steve Biko who died in police custody. No reason was given for his detention under section 22 of the Internal Security Act, which provides for indefinite arrest without trial. Mr Mvovo is married to Steve Biko’s sister, Bandi. He is a former vice-presi-dent of the Black People’s Convention, which Biko helped to found before his death in 1977.
Members of Mr Mvovo s family said they had been told he was being held at the Fort Glamorgan Prison in East London. Also detained was Malusi. Mpumlwana, a former research worker of the banned Black Community Programmes project in which Biko was involved.
Mr Mpumlwana w’as detained without trial for three months last year. On his release in December he was served with a five-year “banning order” restricting him to the remote Zwelitsha district of the Ciskei black homeland.
