Frigate to be replaced

' PA Auckland A new type of British gas turbine-powered frigate is high on the Royal New Zealand Navy’s shopping list as a possible replacement for the 19-year-old frigate Otago. Known as a' Type 24, the new British frigate is little more than a colour brochure design at present, but its general hull specifications will be similar to H.M.S. Arrow, a 2000-ton Type 21 frigate, at present visiting New Zealand.

The Chief of Naval Staff (Rear-Admiral N. D. Anderson) and naval planners spent a day at sea in H.M.S. Arrow to evaluate her performance.

Tlie naval planning team will leave for Britain in a few days to examine possible ship replacements. Some members of the team have already- been to Australia to discuss weaponry.

There are a number of ship types under evaluation. One European shipbuilder can deliver in three years, and another has a possible replacement type already under construction, according to Admiral Anderson. The final decision of the Type 24 is expected to be

completed later this year, but its approximate cost is confidential.

In many respects it would be an updated version of H.M.S. Arrow.- The main difference would be in main engines, armament, and communications.
