Choice of five at Chch poll

Christchurch Central electors go to the polls today to choose a member of Parliament to succeed the late Mr B. G. Barclay. They will have the choice of five candidates. The Labour Party candidate is Mr G. W. R. Palmer, a professor of law at Victoria University, Wellington. The others are Messrs D. P. Duncan (National), an insurance consultant; C. M. Hansen (Economic Euthenics), a service layer with the Christchurch Gas Company; T. M. Heffernan (Social Credit), a secondary schoolteacher; and Miss S. A. Sadler (Tory). At the General Election, Labour won the seat with a 5375 majority on election night. Labour had 8922 votes (62.4 per cent of the valid votes cast), National had 3547 (24.8 per cent). Social Credit had 1337 (9.4 per cent), and Values had 477 (3.3 per cent). Values is not contesting the seat this time.
