Band’s Ellesmere hosts brass band festival history
The Ellesmere Brass Band was officially formed in 1902 and registered as an incorporated society in 1904.
Prior to this a band known as the Leeston Band came into existence about 1890 and served the district until 1900. The Ellesmere Brass Band has been affiliated to the Canterbury Provincial Brass Bands’ Association since the inception of the parent body in 1932. Like most country bands Ellesmere has experienced lean times and low membership numbers, particularly during hard times such as the war years. A concerted effort from 1945 through to the early 1960 s brought about a major revival and the addition of many new players. Since 1971 the band has attended every provincial contest and most national contests and has returned with its fair share of trophies. This competition has improved the band’s standard which has led to improved service to the public of the county.
