Pilot’s spine broken
PA Invercargill A helicopter pilot who was injured in a crash in Fiordland on Sunday has suffered a broken spine. David Richardson, aged 38, of Te Anau, is in the spinal unit at the Burwood Hospital in Christchurch, after first receiving treatment at Kew Hospital in Invercargill. Mr Richardson is making reasonable progress, but will be in hospital for at least three to six months, accord-
ing to doctors at the hospi* al. His life was saved by hit companion, Alan MacDonald, who Wrapped him in a sut» vival blanket and set thg helicopter’s emergency lOca* tor beacon goirig. Mr Mac* Donald, aged 25, a deel shooter, of Waiuku, neat Pukekohe, later died of ids juries suffered in the accw dent. Mr Richardson lay besidg his dead companion in th* snow for three days beforg he was rescued. Mr MacDonald was buried at Auckland yesterday.
