Diversion might cost $1M
An extension to the Christchurch Drainage Board’s new Dudley Creek flood-relief project might cost $1 million, the board’s works committee was told yesterday. A special fund could be set up to pay for the extra work over five years. Diversion work would stretch from Philpotts Road to Paparoa Street. Until the project is done, stormwater overflows will continue to occur upstream of Philpotts Road, where the Dudley Creek diversion pipeline starts. Some of the water will flow into the flood-prone Flockton Street neighbourhood. . The extensions; mainly through rural land,- will also
improve market-gardening drainage on both sides of Cranford Street. Stopbanks will be needed where the open channel goes through low areas. When the diversion is completed, the existing Dudley Creek channel will remain open to cope with its local catchment.
Fendalton sewer A $600,000 project that would replace inadequate sewer lines in Fendalton Road, Clyde Road, Hamilton Avenue, and 11am Road was recommended by the committee. The lines, from 50 to 52 vears old, are seriously gorged during rainstorms. A new system of pipes would end at the railway line on Fendalton Road. J) 'i'f-
Pond help The ornamental pond at St Andrew’s College may help relieve problems of. surface flooding along the upper reaches of St Albans Creek; near Nortnans Road, Ehgineefs told the committee that improvements to the creek could cause more problems for the low-lying Gordon Avenue neighbour* hood, two kilometres downstream. But they Said that diversion piping from Watford Street iflto the ornamental pond would not cause a rise in the pond’s maximum water level, 'the pond discharges into St Albans Creek through a pipeline. Stormwater piping along the relief project would cost about $46,000.
Billy’s Forest Stormwater drainage improvements in the Billy’s Fofest slump area, between Major Hornbrook Road and Mount Pleasant Road, Were reepmmended. The ,slump is on Cioi Council land, it started in 1970 and has been gradually increasing. Improvements to the . slump area’s Outfall would not add. extra water to the bush gully watercourse below Mount Pleasant Road, engineers said, so residents there shotaid not be detrimentally affected by the work. Improvements should be done this financial year, the committee said. Work on improvements downstream, where the watercourse flows through an pld fernery, should also be done soon.
