Generous response to Abbotsford appeal
Christchurch people have been quick, and generous, in their response to the appeal launched in the wake of rhe Abbotsford disaster. In the short time the appeal has been running, more than $33,000 has been igiven to Christchurch local authorities and radio stations. ' Radio Avon has collected ,$10,500, while Radio New Zealand stations have been 'given just over $5,000. I People have swamped the 'Christchurch Cjty Council’s ; offices with just on $lO,OOO, and Canterbury Savings Bank staff have coped with donations totalling just under $7,000. The Waimairi, Heathcote, and Paparua County Councils have accumulated almost $l5OO for the appeal. ' The Post Office is also colelecting money for the Abbotsford victims, but no (figure was available yesterday. A spokesman for the Post Office said yesterday that any moneys given to branch I offices were being forwarded ito the nearest local authority. He could not put a figure (on the total collected and forwarded so far.
