Barbadoes Street Cemetery
Sir, — The intention of the City Council to turn the old Barbadoes Street cemetery into a park is in my view an opportunist move arising out of the vandalism which left the cemetery an eyesore some years ago. Not all the descendants of the pioneers of early Christchurch and surrounding districts are dispersed or indifferent; they have, in fact, sought to preserve their plots and headstones as nearly as possible in their original state. The erection of a monument inscribed with the names of those interred is not likely to meet their emotional needs; more likely, they fear, will it provoke a new generation of vandals to use it as a target for beer bottles. It would be interesting to know the rights of the City Council to supersede any possible objection in this matter. Finally, what have t'he clergy to say? — Yours, etc., PETER KAVANAGH. August 14, 1979.
