Joining with Australia
Sir, — All the talk about amalgamation with Australia .is just wishful thinking at least for the time being, for unless we have the right background here in New Zealand and Australia this desirable arrangement would fail. It is hard to imagine Mr Muldoon agreeing to such a proposition which he believes would deprive him of the powers he now holds in this country plus the prospects of diplomatic missions in the company of his counterpart, Mr Fraser. The time may yet come for another Holyoake or Jack Marshall to arise to join forces with another Bob Menzies that one time great leader of Australia, thus creating a South Pacific bloc of separate States including the North and South Islands of New Zealand. — Yours, etc., L. WESTNEY. August 14, 1979.
