Drivers lose claim

PA Wellington A claim by truck drivers working for Farm Products Co-operative (Hawke s Bay), Ltd, for a $7.36 weekly industry allowance provided for in the General Drivers’ Award has been turned down by the Arbitration Court. In his decision Judge J. P. R. Hom noted that the drivers were already receiving bonuses and commissions exceeding that amount each week. The general award allowed for $7.36 a week only if the drivers’ earnings did not already include bonuses or commissions exceeding that amount. The Hawke's Bay drivers had no specific agreement covering payment of the extra allowance, Judge Hom noted. However, he ruled that if in any one week the commission did not equal or exceed the $7.36 industry allowance that allowance would have to be paid.
