Century for Nicholson
The young Papanui .outside back, Bryce Nicholson, ’ became the first premier : rugby league player to reach a century of points this season when he kicked . five goals against Halswell • on Saturday. Nicholson, in his first ; season in Papanui’s first XIII, has exactly 100 points from four tries and 44 goals, and, with .only three rounds remaining, is well placed to win the trophy for the most prolific goalkicker in the premiership. . Two of Nicholson’s closest rivals, Barry . Edkins (Eastern Suburbs- 1 Hertz. 37 goals) and Lewis I Hudson (Linwo.od, 33), are ’ at present in Auckland with the New Zealand • squad, and another, ; Michael O’Donnell (MaristWestern Suburbs, 34), has also had representative ; commitments this winter. It has been a curiously low-scoring season as far . as top individual aggregates are concerned, and the premiership record of 214 points set by Francis Lawrence when he was . playing for Kaiap.oi in 1975 • is well out of reach.
Most clubs have shared the goal-kicking duties between two or more team members, some of the more established kickers having encountered problems with the white footballs used for most games. Hudson, with 82 points from five tries, 33 goals and a field goal, has the second-highest total, ahead of Edkins (77), O’Donnell (75), Kevin Steel (Kaiapoi, 69), Karl Siave (Sydenham, 61), John Payne (Hornby, 56) and Michael Yule (Halswell, 51).
A very promising allround sportsman, Nicholson (above) attained senior status as a batsman with the Bumside WestUniversity XI in the Canterbury Cricket Association’s competitions last summer. Try-scoring tallies are also generally smaller than usual, and Eddie Kerrigan (Papanui) is in no danger of having his record of 30, established three years ago, exceeded. Leading the list are two forwards, Terry Gillman (Marist) and Lester Wilson (Halswell), with 11 each. Wilson’s side has yet to have the bye in the second round. Peter Klink (Eastern) and Grant Hallett (Hornby) have scored 10 tries each, and, with nine tries, John MacGougan (Marist) and Russell Seaward (Papanui) are next.
