‘Codswallop’
“A load of codswallop” was the reaction from the Superintendent of Paremoremo Prison (Mr J. Hobson) last evening to Mr Prebble’s assertions. Outside the House, Mr Prebble named his informant, who, he said, was a prison officer. The man could not be reached for comment later. Mr Hobson said that the man who gave the information to Mr Prebble had never been a prison officer. But the man had conducted an education extension class at the prison about three years ago.
Mr Hobson said that one inmate at Paremoremo had, about five years ago, taken a correspondence course on coastal navigation. That man was still at the prison and another inmate whose family ran a fishing company was working on a similar course. In between, about three years ago, several prisoners had expressed some interest in a coastal navigation course. Mr Hobson said It ran for only a few weeks because of the lack of interest.
