PA Whakatane Scientists plan to land on White Island by the end of this week to investigate volcanic activity and to check instruments on the island.

A spokesman for the D.S.I.R. in Rptorua said the island’s eruption, which started in 1976, was continuing and did not appear to be abating. Some minor volcanic activity was recorded by the department on Monday night and a big pall of ash rose more than Ikm above the island on Tuesday.
