The day in Parliament

PA Wellington An appropriation of public money was granted to the Estate and Gift Duties Bill, the Industries Development Commission Amendment Bill and the Fisheries Amendment Bill when Parliament sat at 2.30 p.m. yesterday.

Mr B. P. MacDonell (Lab., Dunedin Central) presented a petition on behalf of Merna Brown and 100 others seeking restoration of National Superannuation to its previous level for those with no other incomes. Mr B. C. Beetham (Social Credit, Rangitikei) presented a further petition on behalf of Mrs Jean Lilburn, Mrs Joan Naylor and 700 others seeking retention of the Whare-ora Hospital at Hunterville. Annual reports of the National Provident Fund Board, the Rural Bank and Finance Corporation and the Liquid Fuels Trust Board were tabled. Members tabled 12 motions. Mr D. F. Caygill (Lab., St Albans) gave notice of his intention to introduce the Police Offences Amendment Bill.

The Waitemata City Passenger Transport Bill was introduced and referred to the Local Bills Committee. The Pharmacy Amend-

ment Bill was reported back from the Social Services Committee without amendment.

Reports on three petitions were presented. The petition of Joy E. Bell calling for increased taxes on liquor, cigarettes and gambling was referred to the Government for consideration, as was the petition of Cornelius de Ruiter praying for relief.

The petition of Brian Peter Connolly and 6150 others asking for amendment to the Apple and Pear Marketing Act so that restrictions on the direct purchase of apples and pears would be removed was referred to the Govment for favourable consideration.

The Lyttelton Waterworks Transfer Amendment Bill and the Christchurch District Drainage Amendment Bill were put through the committee stages and given a third reading. The Greytown Trust Lands Bill was given a second reading. The Waitemata City Council (Vesting) Bill was withrawn and struck off the Order Paper. Parliament continued the Budget debate before and after the dinner adjournment. The House rose at 11.30 pan.
